We've visited beaches all over mainland Portugal with our kids. This is the honest shortlist: swimmability, wind, crowds and parking — not just the prettiest photos.
The Algarve — south coast coves
Warmest water in Portugal, golden cliffs, and calm seas most of the summer. Go early or go east to dodge the crowds.
Praia da Marinha
Portugal's postcard beach. Arrive before 10am; the cliff-top walk from Benagil is half the experience.
Praia da Ilha de Tavira
A ferry ride from Tavira to an 11km sandbar. Space for everyone, even in August.
Praia do Camilo, Lagos
200 steps down to a tiny perfect cove. Better for photos and snorkeling than a full beach day.
Praia da Fuseta
The calm, shallow lagoon side of the Ria Formosa — our pick for small children on the south coast.
Costa Vicentina — the wild west
Atlantic swells, dramatic cliffs and a fraction of the crowds. Cooler water, stronger wind, unforgettable scenery.
Praia de Odeceixe
A river meets the sea here — ocean waves on one side, warm shallow river on the other. Two beaches in one.
Praia da Arrifana, Aljezur
A huge sandy bowl under black cliffs. Surf schools at the north end, space at the south.
Praia da Amoreira
Dunes, a river estuary and almost never full. One of the Algarve's best-kept secrets.
Praia do Amado
The west coast's most consistent surf beach, with board rental and schools right on the sand.
Around Lisbon — city beaches
You don't need to go far from the capital. A 30–40 minute train or drive puts you on genuinely good sand.
Praia de Carcavelos
The classic Lisbon beach break — direct train from Cais do Sodré, surfable most of the year.
Praia da Adraga
Our favourite near Lisbon: dramatic rock stacks below the Sintra hills, and a great fish restaurant at the back of the sand.
Praia do Meco
South of the city, backed by clay cliffs and far quieter than the Cascais line.
River beaches — the insider pick
No waves, no wind, warm water and often a café in the shade. Central Portugal's praias fluviais are where locals spend August.
Praia Fluvial de Loriga
A mountain stream pool in a Serra da Estrela glacial valley. Cold but spectacular.
Praia Fluvial do Agroal
A natural spring pool near Tomar with facilities and shade — ideal with kids.
Praia Fluvial da Fraga da Pegada, near the Douro
Calm reservoir swimming surrounded by terraced vineyards.
