Portugal with kids: the honest guide from a family doing it right now
We're the family behind @our_adventures_in_portugal — we explore Portugal with our own kids, full-time. This is everything we tell friends before their first family trip here.

Why Portugal works so well with kids
Portuguese culture genuinely loves children — waiters bring extra chairs without being asked, nobody minds noise at dinner, and kids eat free or half-price in most tascas. Add short driving distances (Lisbon to the Algarve is under 3 hours), safe beaches and 300 days of sun in the south, and it's one of Europe's easiest family destinations.
The beaches that actually work with children
Look for three things: lifeguards (most Blue Flag beaches have them June–September), a gentle slope into the water, and a café within sight of your towel. Our proven picks: Praia da Fuseta's lagoon side (Algarve), Odeceixe's river side (west coast, warm shallow water), Carcavelos near Lisbon (easy train access, surf schools for older kids), and the Ria Formosa islands from Olhão (calm, shallow, endless sand).
Short hikes little legs can manage
Skip the famous long trails. Instead: the Seven Hanging Valleys cliff walk is doable in short sections with huge payoffs, the Passadiços do Paiva boardwalks have stroller-friendly stretches, the Mata do Buçaco forest near Luso feels like a fairy tale with its palace and shaded paths, and Peneda-Gerês has short riverside trails to natural swimming pools at Tahiti and Poço Azul.
When it rains (it happens)
Lisbon: the Oceanário is genuinely one of Europe's best aquariums — budget half a day. Porto: World of Discoveries and the Sea Life centre. Everywhere: Portuguese shopping centres have excellent free soft-play areas, and the smaller science museums (Pavilhão do Conhecimento in Lisbon, the puppet museum in Porto) are uncrowded and cheap.
Eating out with kids — the real rules
Dinner starts late (restaurants fill around 20:00), so eat at 19:00 and you'll have the place to yourselves. Order 'meia dose' (half portions) for kids anywhere — it's normal. The prato do dia at lunch is the best-value meal in Europe. And yes, pastel de nata for breakfast is culturally acceptable. We've checked. Extensively.
Where to base yourselves
One week: pick one base and do day trips — Ferragudo or Carvoeiro in the Algarve, or Cascais near Lisbon. Two weeks: split between the Lisbon area and either the Algarve (beach focus) or Porto/Douro (scenery and food focus). Constantly changing accommodation is the number-one family travel mistake — we've made it so you don't have to.
